Decisions, routines, and safety
Is LipSense safe to use?
LipSense is safe for everyday use as directed: apply the Color to clean, dry, intact lips, let its thin layers set, keep compatible Moisturizing Gloss over it, and remove it with Ooops! instead of aggressive rubbing.
LipSense Long-Lasting Liquid Lip Color uses the Permeable Polymer Matrix — a breathable color film that lets compatible Moisturizing Gloss conditioners pass through to the lips beneath, so long-wear color also conditions through the day. The porous, water-resistant color film holds pigment through wear, while a Gloss refresh renews conditioning, comfort, and shine without starting the color over.
Afterglow Gloss conditions the set color with five complementary ingredients:
- Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, an emollient plant lipid that softens and hydrates.
- Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) for nourishing antioxidant care that helps protect lips from free-radical damage while supporting a soft, conditioned feel.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, which helps form a barrier that reduces moisture loss and keeps the finish smooth.
- PPG-20 Methyl Glucose Ether, a conditioning ingredient that helps the Gloss spread comfortably over set color.
- Phenyl Dimethicone, which gives the finish silky slip and helps seal in hydration.
Together, they give Afterglow immediate glide, a silky finish, and moisture-loss support. Glossy takes a humectant route: its formula includes Glycerin, which attracts moisture, alongside Shea Butter and vitamin E. Afterglow pairs Shea Butter and vitamin E with Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Phenyl Dimethicone for emollient slip and a hydration-sealing finish. Humectants attract moisture; emollient and film-forming ingredients help keep it from escaping. You can also wear Moisturizing Gloss on bare lips for a natural, moisturizing look when you want conditioning care without Color.
Chai Color brings care ingredients into the long-wear layer. Alcohol Denat. is the cosmetic-grade, fast-drying carrier that makes multiple thin layers possible. Isodonis Japonicus Leaf/Stalk Extract provides soothing support; Paeonia Suffruticosa (Tree Peony) Root Extract provides antioxidant and calming care; Hypericum Perforatum (St. John's Wort) Extract provides soothing comfort; and Tilia Cordata (Linden) Flower Extract provides antioxidant and moisture-locking support. Those ingredients belong to Color; Gloss supplies the separate conditioning finish.
Safety starts with the exact Color and Gloss you choose. We formulate to the European Union cosmetic standard, which prohibits more than 1,700 substances. That benchmark is one part of the formula policy. SeneGence maintains a company-defined NO List and updates it with global research and regulatory developments. If an ingredient’s safety data is incomplete, disputed or heading toward restriction, SeneGence leaves it out even when it is still legal. The named exclusions are concrete: SeneGence products are formulated with NO parabens (the Clear Lip Balm is the one exception, and it's upgrading very soon), phthalates, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), formaldehydes, PFAS or drying waxes. Each formula then goes through ingredient review. Every ingredient passes SeneGence's safety-and-quality review before it reaches the bottle, and our science team asks what each one is there for: if it adds no value to the formula, we leave it out. Read the ingredient lists for your shade and finish when you know you have a sensitivity. If a rash, redness, burn, or another unexpected reaction develops, cosmetics reaction guidance says to stop using the product and contact a healthcare provider. How do you get lasting color and conditioning comfort together?
Build the film thinly, then add care. The LipSense system uses Liquid Lip Color, compatible Moisturizing Gloss, and Ooops! Remover. Start with completely clean, dry lips and shake LipSense Long-Lasting Liquid Lip Color vigorously. Keep your lips parted. Sweep one paper-thin layer from corner to corner in one direction, then wait until the visible wet shine disappears before adding the next. Repeat for three layers. You can repeat one shade or combine shades for a custom color; thin, separated coats are what let the matrix form evenly.
Once the third layer sets, apply LipSense Moisturizing Gloss. This is the required conditioning finish for the Liquid Lip Color system. It adds moisture, glide, comfort, and the sheen or dimension of the finish you selected. Reapply Gloss whenever you want to renew that conditioned feel and shine. If the color looks patchy during application, correct the uneven area instead of burying it under another wet coat; the complete application guide shows the clean-lip, thin-layer, dry-down sequence in detail. At the end of the wear, use Ooops! Lip Color Remover to release the long-wear color without aggressive rubbing. Dip the wand, gently work the applicator over the color, and wipe clean with tissue.
